The Ground is Alive: Understanding the Soil We Stand On *

  • The Reed Center for Ecosystem Reintegration 1932 Mountain Church Road Middletown, MD, 21769 United States (map)

Soil is the living home that breathes, grows, transmits information and supports an unfathomable universe beneath our feet. In this class we'll be exploring the layers of soil ecology, from the complex ecosystems that form the ground beneath us to how to build soil using composting at different scales.

The format of this class is multiple hours of classroom time interspersed with time in nature and hands-on activities. Taking this class will help enrich your understanding of the profound interconnectedness between the organisms in the soil, the chemical and physical properties of the soil, and the health of the overall ecosystem and the humans that rely upon it.

Please bring your own lunch and water bottle, a notebook, something to write with, warm layers, and durable shoes or boots. We will be providing light snacks, water, coffee, and tea.

* This class is mandatory if you are taking the permaculture design course.

This class counts toward the permaculture design certification, if you have signed up to take the PDC.

There are 8 PDC credit hours given for attending this class.

All classes are offered on a sliding scale pricing model; please pay at the rate that is within the means of your lived reality.
