Taking a Long-Term View: Forest Gardens & Food Forests *

  • The Reed Center for Ecosystem Reintegration 1932 Mountain Church Road Middletown, MD, 21769 United States (map)

In this class, we will be diving into the ins and outs of how to design and care for forest gardens and food forests.

A forest garden is a garden that replicates the way a natural forest or woodland ecosystem organizes itself, and a food forest does so on a larger scale. This type of agriculture and landscape design works with a long-term vision in mind, by incorporating perennial trees and shrubs to meet human needs for food, beauty, and belonging, while supporting the land to reforest itself.

Taking this class will support you in confidently shifting from annual to perennial gardening, if you choose to do so, in some or all of your work with the land. It will also offer insights about what to consider in making that choice. The format of this class is multiple hours of classroom time interspersed with time in nature and hands-on activities.

Please bring your own lunch and water bottle, a notebook, something to write with, warm layers, and durable shoes or boots. We will be providing light snacks, water, coffee, and tea.

* This class is mandatory if you are taking the permaculture design course.

This class counts toward the permaculture design certification, if you have signed up to take the PDC.

There are 8 PDC credit hours given for attending this class.
