Advanced Permaculture Landscape Design / Decomposition & Renewal: The Nuances of Coppicing, Mulching, and Mycology

  • The Reed Center for Ecosystem Reintegration 1932 Mountain Church Road Middletown, MD, 21769 United States (map)

The Advanced Permaculture Landscape Design portion of the day is for people who have familiarity with permaculture or ecological landscape design principles, and some experience working on and with the land. We'll be covering more advanced design techniques, including strategies for making long-term management of these landscapes easier.

We recognize the importance of design in allowing people with differing backgrounds and levels of permaculture experience to participate constructively in the ongoing care of the land. The format of this class includes classroom time interspersed with time in nature and hands-on activities.

In Decomposition & Renewal, we will explore how the techniques of coppicing and pollarding have been used for millennia. We'll learn how to build coppicing and pollarding into your project for rapid production of fuel, fodder, fencing, and fertility as well as wildlife habitat and crafting materials. We will also explore how to choose the correct mulch for the correct plants and habitats. Furthermore, we'll discuss the role of fungi in holding and dispersing vital nutrients and water throughout the landscape and how we can tap into decomposition as a vital source of food and medicine.

Students will take home a mushroom log for their own use. There will be classroom time interspersed with time in nature and hands-on activities.

Please bring your own lunch and water bottle, a notebook, something to write with, warm layers, and durable shoes or boots. We will be providing light snacks, water, coffee, and tea.

This class counts toward the permaculture design certification, if you have signed up to take the PDC.

There are 8 PDC credit hours given for attending this class.
